Club Members Shine at the WA State 60m Championships
On Saturday, February 8th, a strong contingent of 10 Curtin University Athletics Club athletes lined up on the start line at the WA Athletics Stadium for the inaugural and highly anticipated 60m State Championships. Under the guidance and mentoring of club coach Kim Taylor, Curtin was strongly represented in the Open 60m events with 3 x women and 7 x men representing the club. It led to an exciting afternoon of competition and camaraderie amongst them all.
With the group showing incredible determination amongst fierce competition, two standout athletes made it through to the finals, showcasing their strength and skill on the big stage.
Bryce Teo, our club president, was inspirational, winning his heat in a time of 6.98 to qualify for the final. In the final, Bryce crossed the line in 6th place with a time of 7.07.
In the women's 60m event, Meg Whittington, fresh off the plane from the Australian Short Course Championships in Sydney, showed the same explosive speed that saw her progress though the heats of the Bay Sheffield early this season, and finished 2nd in her heat behind former National women's 60m recorded holder Taylah Cruttenden. Meg's time qualified her for the final with a time of 7.77. Meg finished 5th overall in the final with a time of 7.80.
A huge congratulations to everyone who competed and made the Championships a memorable one for the club We’re incredibly proud of all our athletes’ performances.
The Club would also like to acknowledge the tremendous achievement of Jesse Huria’s who won the Championship Gold medal in the Open Heptathlon in the previous week's competition. This is Jesse's second championship win this year and the second time she has achieved a points tally exceeding National qualifying standards.
